Introduction to 3D printing

The main focus in our speaker project is to obtain a knowledge about 3D-print and get a hands-on feeling on how the printer works. We were introduced to the technology in an e-learning course made by our professor Ali Özkil and a 3D-print specialist; lovely Lasse.

Our professor had made an e-learning course where all of us students followed five online courses and had a final test. In these videos we got introduced to 3d-printing methods and the so far development in this technology.

When a new model has to be printet a user will have to transfer an .stl-file to the 3D-printing program “Z-Suite” where the .stl-file will be translated to a g-code file format which is readable by the 3D-printer.

Furthermore we were introduced to setting up a 3D-print. Here our professor emphasized how important the orientation of the file is – it can save a lot of material and strengthen the build. The printer will often have to add supporting material to avoid the printet file to warp.
The supporting material is easy to remove afterwards.

The most commonly used filament material is the biodegradable thermoplastic PLA and the plastic ABS. Our speaker is made of Z-ultrat ABS.
